Breast Reduction - Reduction Mammoplasty

Breast reduction surgery is a safe operation. It is one of the body contouring surgeries that have been performed since the beginning of the 19th century and which can be done safely applying the various incision techniques that had been developed especially since the middle of the last century. However, there are low risk probabilities as in every surgery such as bleeding, hematoma, infection and anesthetic side effect in this surgery.

In order to have a breast reduction surgery, the candidates of this operation have to be over 18 years old and complete their body development. You can observe the changes immediately after surgery. There is a visible change in the post-operative period. • Wear the sports bra over your dressings after the surgery. It is important for reducing the edema and shaping the chest muscles. 
• Severe pain is not expected after breast reduction surgery; you may have some pain in the first few days, but it is reduced with painkillers in the early postoperative period.
• Since the routine doctor check is important after the surgery, patients coming from outside the city should stay in the city for 5 days. This period may change depending on the physician’s advice.
• Bruising and swellings on breasts may occur after the surgery. This is normal. In order to regulate your blood flow and reduce bruising and swellings, you can put ice or cold pack on the bruising and swelling areas according to you doctor’s advice. It is recommended to massage gently on your breasts 3 weeks after the operation. More detailed information is given by your doctor during the checks. 
• Do not lie down on your breasts (or in a prone position) at least 2 months.
• Don’t stretch your arms and pectoral muscle in first 7 days and don’t lift heavy and drive a vehicle.
• You can start to take a walk 2 weeks after the operation. At the end of the first week, you can do your own work. But you should not exercise heavily, swim, and use excessive force in the first 4-6 weeks.

After the surgery, tour breasts become more natural in time. The incision scars are on the breast crease. Firstly, they are red; after a while they would turn pink, later become white, and finally become obscure in time, nearly between 6 or 12 months.

• Loss of sensation in the nipples may occur after the surgery, but this lasts generally a day. 
• A breast asymmetry may occur depending on your body and breast structure after the surgery. However, these kinds of complaints and problems also reduce by recovering your breasts in time.
• After this procedure, some breastfeeding problems may be seen depending on breast reduction technique, so women who desire to have a child should consider this probability and tell their expectations to the doctor.
• Bruising and swellings on breasts may occur after the surgery. This is normal.

Since the operation lasts approximately 2 or 3 hours, breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia

• Since smoking delays wound healing, please stop smoking at least 4 weeks before the surgery.
• Please inform your doctor, if you have had surgery before, chronic diseases, and if you take any medicine and pills. 
• Stop taking blood thinners such as aspirin and using homeopathic agents such as vitamin E, because they may increase bleeding; but do not forget to inform and consult your doctor before stopping them.
• If you had influenza and flue before the surgery, please inform your doctor.
• Avoid sun exposure and sunbath immediately before the surgery.
• Stop eating and drinking at least 8 hours before the surgery.
• In addition to preoperative blood tests, breast ultrasonography can be performed if mammography is required.

As long as you do not stretch and move too much your arms, you can meet your daily needs after you discharge from the hospital. You can get back to your normal life nearly after 7 days and to your work life after 7 or 10 days.

Although results of this operation are permanent, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding and gravity can cause to increase breast size and sagging. Therefore, in order to maintain of your breasts form, you should watch your weight and do sports.

After the examinations and consultations, you have the surgery. It lasts between 1 and 3 hours. The hospital stay is 1 day. However, it may change depending on the physician’s advice. There may be a drain which is placed for this surgery. You should not move your arms in the first days. Due to anesthetic effects, dizziness and nausea may occur in the first hours, but these complaints reduce gradually in the following hours.
