Lasek Eye Surgery

What is a LASEK eye treatment?

It is a classic laser treatment method in which refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism are removed with an excimer laser. Basically, it is a form of treatment between the LASIK method and PRK. It is used in cases where the corneal structure (LASIK) is not suitable. Its main advantage is the preservation of the corneal thickness. With the LASEK method, the flap is prepared by applying alcohol to the corneal epithelium, opened manually, the refractive error is corrected with the excimer laser and the flap is put back in its place.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Lasek Eye Surgery

Who can have Lasek Eye Surgery?

People can have LASEK if they:

  • are over 18 years old,
  • have not changed their glasses prescription in the recent year,
  • have myopia and astigmatism up to -3 diopters,
  • have corneal thickness that is less than 500 micrometers,
  • are not suitable for Lasik Eye treatment,

LASEK can be performed on people who have appropriate pupil size, corneal thickness etc. depending on the results of the eye examination performed before the operation.

Who cannot have Lasek Eye Surgery?

People cannot have LASEK, if they have:

  • problems such as corneal thickness that are not suitable for an operation,
  • structural disorder in keratoconus or corneal dystrophy,
  • cataracts,
  • severe dry eye disease or high eye pressure,
  • uncontrolled diabetes,
  • rheumatic diseases,
  • HIV-positive,
  • been pregnant or breastfeeding.
Lasek Eye Surgery steps
  • The LASEK steps are almost similar with LASIK.
  • Firstly, the eyes are numbed by giving a mild anesthesia 30 minutes before the procedure. Thus, the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure.
  • During the surgery, an eye retractor is used that helps to keep open the eyelids.
  • The flap is also prepared with the LASEK method. In contrast to the LASIK method, the LASEK flap is created manually by applying alcohol to the corneal surface epithelium.
  • After the epithelial tissue being folded, the refractive error in the cornea is removed by using an Excimer Laser.
  • The tissue is put again on the cornea after the laser treatment, and the healing process is started by putting on a contact lens.
What are the early postoperative discomfort and complaints? What precautions to take after Lasek Eye Surgery?

In LASEK, pain in the eyes can occur in the first 6 to 12 hours after the operation. Special protective contact lenses are placed on the eye, and they remain until epithelial tissue healed. Also, until the tissue on the cornea heals (approx. 4 to 5 days), symptoms such as pressure, burning and watering eyes can occur. These protective contact lenses are removed after 4 or 5 days

Returning to the normal life after the LASEK

All patients who have LASEK should rest for the first 3 days. Patients can return to their normal life after the contact lenses are removed

After LASEK, a good vision can be reached after a week. After 3 months, this becomes much better. During this time, patients can continue their daily life

What are the advantages the LASEK?

Although the healing process of LASEK Eye Surgery is more painful and longer than that of the LASIK, LASEK is a safe method that has been used for many years

It provides a treatment option for patients who have a thin cornea and poor eyesight

What are the disadvantages the LASEK?

Eye defects that are corrected after LASEK treatment can reappear in the future. Nowadays, by means of the technology, femtosecond laser treatment is performed as an alternative to the LASEK method on patients who have a thin cornea. The most suitable method for the patient is determined after a detailed eye examination
